HEEDING GOD’S WORD OF CORRECTION

A dispute arose among them as to which of them was considered to be greatest. Jesus said to them, “The kings of the Gentiles lord it over them…. But you are not to be like that. Instead, the greatest among you should be like the youngest.”

—L UKE 22:24-26

In the natural world, we are taught to think that skyscraping stature is the crowning prize of life. But then Christ comes along and throws a kink in our thinking. He corrects our assumptions of superiority by leading us step by step, all the way back to the bottom of the ladder of success. He invites us to join him in servant lifestyle and reminds us to study the young. Maybe when he said that “the greatest among you should be like the youngest,” he was thinking of young David or Joseph. In the beginning, both David and Joseph were runts of the bunch. Both were given menial tasks and lorded over by their brothers. Yet both willingly submitted to God’s secret of servanthood, and then, after graduating from the boot camp of humility, both rose to unprecedented greatness.

Our culture is consumed with position and advancement, but to those with his family name, Jesus says, “You are not to be like that.”

As we speed off to leave our mark on the world, Christ calmly steps onto the track and waves a yellow caution flag. He tells us again that it is not the one racing his engine in the lead pole position who wins his praise. More likely, it is the one willing to serve hot dogs in the stands who pleases him most.
